Enochian Magick

Enochian Magick is a special branch of magick that was begun in modern times by Dr. John Dee, court astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I, and his psychic partner, Edward Kelly. Dee and Kelly discovered an ancient language they called the Angelic, or Enochian, Language. The alphabet of this archaic language has 21 letters. It has its own grammar and syntax, but only a small sample of it has ever been translated into English. Dee and Kelly were directed by Angels to produce several tablets containing squares, with a letter in each square. Kelly would gaze into a crystal where he could see Angels, and communicate with them. Dee would record the conversations between Kelly and the crystal shrewstone Angels. Together, they produced many curious tablets. Five of these are especially important—the Four Watchtower Tablets and the Tablet of Union. Each square on these tablets represents a region in the subtle, invisible worlds that surround the Earth. Each tablet represents a map of one of the five Cosmic Planes of Manifestation. These planes exist in the regions between the divine plane of God, and the matter of our gross physical plane. In addition, a person’s body is made of the elemental substance of each plane. The planes interpenetrate each other and are named after the five known cosmic elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Spirit. Each tablet corresponds with a color, a direction, and a cosmic plane and subtle body as shown below.

In addition to the Watchtower Tablets and the Tablet of Union, 30 special regions, called the Aires, or Aethyrs, were also investigated. They range in serial order, from the most material to the most spiritual, and are complementary to the Watchtowers. The Watchtowers and Aethyrs of Enochian Magick have striking similarities with the Sephiroth and paths of the Tree of Life as taught in Qabalistic Magick. Enochian Magick is a comprehensive system of magick. Besides the basic system there is Enochian Tarot. Enochian Tarot is a new system of divination using the deities and locations of Enochian Magick. Like the traditional Tarot system, it can also be used for meditation.

The basic teachings relating to Enochian Magick and the Angelic language, as revealed by Dee and Kelly, were taken up at the end of the last century by a secret occult group known as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The Golden Dawn used the mysterious tablets and language in their rituals and magickal ceremonies. They amplified Enochian Magick by creating what are known as the signposts of the squares. Just as a good map points out the major sites of an unknown area for a traveler to prevent him or her from getting lost, so do the signposts predict the general atmosphere, the names of the local deities, and so on, for each of the Watchtower Squares. Two of the methods used by the Golden Dawn to visit these regions were skrying and traveling in the Spirit Vision. Skrying was the method used by Kelly to discover the Tablets. It involved gazing into a crystal, or similar material, and recording whatever visions were seen—or voices heard. The Spirit Vision method is similar to what is known today as astral traveling—a consciously directed out-of-body experience.

The primary goal of Enochian Magick is the attainment of knowledge and power. This is accomplished by visiting the subtle regions of the Cosmic Planes of Manifestation and conversing with the inhabitants and rulers of the regions. The knowledge and power gained should give the magician a better understanding of humankind and the universe. According to Enochian Magick, we do not have to be slaves to the forces of cosmic justice (karma) that always seem to control our lives. Through Enochian Magick, people can consciously direct their lives and even destinies.

The two main rituals in Enochian Magick are the Pentagram and the Hexagram Rituals below. These rituals are given as examples only and are not intended for use without proper preparation. Please study Enochian Magic: A Practical Manual or An Advanced Guide to Enochian Magick before using either of the rituals.

Because of the power inherent in the Enochian system, the creators of this version of the rituals suggest you should fully understand the meanings and impact of its words and actions as described in their writings on Enochian magic. Many experts agree that for best effect, you should totally understand every aspect of a ritual before performing it.

THE PENTAGRAM RITUAL
Step 1: Stand. Touch your forehead and say, "ZAH" (zod-ah).
Step 2: Touch your left breast and say, "ONDOH" (oh-doh).
Step 3: Touch your right shoulder and say, "MIH" (mee-heh).
Step 4: Touch your left shoulder and say, "BUZD" (boo-zod-deh).
Step 5: Touch both hands together on your right breast and say, "PAID" (pah-ee-deh).
Step 6: Turn to the East, trace a yellow Penta-gram of Air before you and say, "EXARP" (etz-ar-peh).
Step 7: Turn to the South, trace a red Penta-gram of Fire before you and say, "BITOM" (bee-toh-meh).
Step 8: Turn to the West, trace a blue Pentagram of Water before you and say, "HKOMA" (heh-koh-mah).
Step 9: Turn to the North, trace a black Pentagram of Earth before you and say, "NANTA" (nah-en-tah).
Step 10: Face the North, extend your arms outward to form a cross and say:
Before me, IKZHIKAL (ee-keh-zeh-hee-kal).
Behind me, EDLPRNAA (eh-del-par-nah-ah).
On my right, BATAIVAH (bah-tah-ee-vah).
On my left, RAAGIOSL (rah-ah-gee-oh-sel).
Behold, the four flaming pentagram And I alone in the midst.

THE HEXAGRAM RITUAL
Step 1: Stand with feet together, left arm down at your side and right arm out before you.
Step 2: Turn to the East and say, "IVITDT" (ee -veh-ee-teh-deh-teh) while tracing the yellow Hexagram of Air before you. Say each letter of the formula while tracing a corresponding side of the hexagram and then say: Behold, the Burning Flames of Truth that consume sorrow, sin and death
Step 3: Turn to the South and say, "ZTZTZT" (zod-teh-zod-teh-zod-teh) while tracing the red Hexagram of Fire before you. Say each letter of the formula while tracing a corresponding side of the hexagram, and then say: Behold, the Way of Love is to sacrifice All into the Cup.
Step 4: Turn to the West and say, "IVITDT" (ee-veh-ee-teh-deh-teh) in the same manner as in Step 2, but trace the blue Hexagram of Water.
Step 5: Turn to the North and say, "ZTZTZT" (zod-teh-zod-teh-zod-teh) in the same manner as in Step 3, but trace the black Hexagram of Earth.
Step 6: Extend your arms outward in the form of a cross and say: Before me, MORDIAIHKTGA (moh-ar-dee-al-heh-keh-teh-gah). Behind me, OIPTEAAPDOKE(oh-ee-peh-teh-ah-ah-peh-doh-keh). On my right, OROIBAHAOZPI(oh-roh-ee-bah-hah-oh-zod-pee). On my left, MPHARSLGAIOL(meh-peh-har-sel-gah-ii-oh-leh). Above me and below me, My Magickal Universe, And behold, I alone In the midst.
